Christmas in Florida

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JESUS and MERRY, MERRY CHRISTMAS
FROM THE KITCHEN OF PATT VITANZA in sunny Apollo Beach, Florida!

The boys are at it again; just like Thanksgiving, they took over the kitchen, cooking the turkey and ham, and "letting the women" do  side dishes and clean up.  The turkey was one of the best I've ever tasted and Ricky gets all the credit for watching a simple U Tube video and putting it to the test.  Plump and juicy with a sausage crust lying just under the browned to perfection skin.  I think he needs his own cooking show LOL.

What started out as a chilly morning turned into a beautiful day.  We started out at Ricky's home, where his three girls were anxiously awaiting Santa.  The adults were anxiously awaiting breakfast, compliments of Debbie.  We began our day with a hearty oven baked breakfast casserole, juice, muffins and hot coffee - and don't forget the chocolates for Nan!

With Nan playing Santa Claus, presents were opened, batteries secured, and toys played with ... Olivia looked like a princess in her new pink ballet tutu, Alicia cuddled up in her new winter sweater and hat, and Nan overjoyed with her new computer.

After clean up detail, we moved two blocks over to Patt's home, leaving Ricky and his girls to take a nap before the afternoon feeding frenzy.  Sounds like Ricky was the only one to take a nap tho!

We set up the festive tables on the outdoor patio and soon good smells began filling the house.  There were more presents to open, lots and lots of food to eat, and stories to tell.  Patt had given Debbie, Rob & Ricky their framed graduation pictures and we all had a good laugh at the hair styles and how much Deb & Rob looked alike.  Lots of good memories were shared about Toni Ann, and we all wished that Melia & Larry could have been there sharing their stories too!

We hope that you and your families all shared a wonderful holiday.  We missed our family at home but this is a Christmas we will cherish always.

Love to you all,

DECEMBER IN FLORIDA

Whoa, guess I'd better get caught up on my blog before the snow starts falling, I mean Christmas!  We've had an enjoyable couple of weeks even though the temperature has dipped below freezing for a couple of nights.  It still warms up during the day.  We've had a couple of days of wet weather (yep our leak is still there) and experienced a lunar eclipse.

Too cold to drive the Cobra but December 4th found us driving to a car show in Bradenton, Florida which is about an hour drive south from Riverview.  There were about 50 participants and some very nice cars.  Had a bite to eat and decided since we were in the area we would drive on over to Bradenton Beach and Anna Marie Island.

Anna Marie Key is a barrier island and is approximately seven miles long north to south.  Home to sugar white pristine beaches, lots and lots of birds - pelicans, cranes, herons, bottlenose dolphins and manatees are often seen, and the beach is home to nesting sea turtles.  In September of 2006, an earthquake occurred in the Gulf of Mexico which was felt on the beach but caused no damage.  Took a short walk on the beach and took pictures of the "sand castles."  We had Harley with us, so did not spend a lot of time nosing around but we will be back soon.

After returning from our drive, we dropped Harley off at home and headed out to watch our first Christmas Boat Parade on the Alafia River, which is just up the street from us.  Jackets were in order, as we followed the delicious smell of the chili cookoff that was in progress.  Set along the Alafia River at the Showman's Association building, holiday blow-ups dominated the grassy area, with the most popular being a large round pool, filled with about 2 feet of water containing extremely large, clear balls that kids could get in and try to stand up in.  The best I can describe it - a hamster rolling ball LOL.  They were having a ball tho.  Dick sat down to have a slice of pizza and I went in search of the good smelling chili - ummm, for five bucks you got a bowl and all the chili you could eat.  Some was a little too spicy for my taste but I did try them all.  Of course Santa was present with his elves.  We waited in anticipation for the boats to show up but were honestly a little disappointed - there were about five of them and it was not what we expected at all.

My nephew Rick works for Garba Industrial, who provides electrical installation and services maritime and industrial customers.  They have customers all over the world and Rick is always off on some journey or another; he most recently returned from a three day jaunt to Come-By-Chance, Newfoundland.  No really, that's the name!

We were invited to his company Christmas party on Friday night (December 10th) and what a feast it was.  Held in their warehouse, it was decorated from head to toe in tinsel, lights and balloons.  We could smell it before we actually saw the building - they had been barbequeing since 4 AM and the smell was wonderful!  Along with pulled pork and smoked chicken, we had boiled prawns, several types of salads, beans and, of course, collard greens LOL.  The band was playing and the beer was flowing, and I had one girl hug me and tell me that she absolutely loved me.  Not sure what to think since we'd never met, it was in the bathroom, and I think she had a wee bit too much of the jolly in her!  We met Rick's boss Rafal (who immigrated from Poland in 1982) and his cute little wife Nicole.  It was truly a mismash of cultures - from Cuban to Chinese and beyond, and a lot of fun.

PEEK A BOO, I SEE YOU

On Friday the 17th, we headed back to Tampa for a day at the Florida Aquarium, followed by a drive to Ybor City.

The Florida Aquarium was absolutely wonderful showcasing some beautiful spoonbills, tarpon fish, lots of sea critters, and, of course, alligators.  Everything was up close and personal.  The bird and fish areas were open and the exhibits within touching distance - great for taking pics!  We spent about two hours investigating every exhibit and I still think that the SeaHorses are my favorite!  Who knew that there was such a thing as Potbelly Seahorses????

A short drive and we were in Ybor City (pronounced EE-borh) which is a historic neighborhood in Tampa. It was founded in the 1880s by cigar manufacturers and was populated by thousands of immigrants, mainly from Spain, Cuba, and Italy. For the next 50 years, workers in Ybor City's cigar factories would roll millions of cigars annually.

The neighborhood had features unusual among contemporary immigrant communities in the southern U.S, most notably its multi-ethnic and multi-racial population and their many mutual aid societies. A slow exodus out of the area that began during the Great Depression accelerated after World War II, leading to a period of abandonment and decay. After decades of neglect, a portion of the original neighborhood was redeveloped into a  night club and entertainment district. The neighborhood has been designated as a  National Historic Landmark District.  My sister tells me though that you don't want to be in this neighborhood after dark!

Well, it took him a few weeks but Dick finally found a car show he wanted to attend, as a participant.  So, early on Saturday morning, December 11th, in the fog, we loaded the car with Christmas presents and headed to a Christmas Fundraiser car show put on by the local radio station Q105 and the Highrollers Car Club.  Rudolph would have definitely needed his red nose to find his way in the fog .... WOW - there were over 200 cars in attendance, everyone decked out for the holidays, and everyone from Santa to Elvis showed up.  All of the proceeds went to the Q105 Christmas Wish foundation.  At this car show I concentrated more on the "faces of cars" rather than the cars themselves.  See how many "faces" you can find ....

I know I'm trying to cram a lot into this blog but I really do want to get caught up before Christmas.  After the holidays, it's my intent to keep a daily diary and send out the blog once a week.

Have you ever seen a Golf Cart Parade?  Well, neither have we!  No really, we got up early on Saturday morning (Dec 18th) to attend the Sun City Golf Car Parade with my sister Patt.  The only thing she forgot to tell us - it was LAST WEEK!  So, no we've not seen a golf cart parade but can only imagine it.  It was funny cause I had read the article on the parade, noted the date was the 11th, and didn't think any more about it.  Something about being retired!
So, we opted to meet up later and check out the Apollo Beach Boat Parade, which Patt assured us was tonight and was usually really good.  We headed for a restaurant called Circles located on Apollo Beach on one of the canal waterways where we would have a great view of the boat parade.  We bellied up to the bar table - the place was packed - order and ate a great dinner and then headed outside to watch the parade.

The weather was glorious and the boat decorations were outstanding.  We found a seat on the dock and settled in to watch.  The houses on the bay were all in their holiday best and the boats were equally amazing.  The end boat set off fireworks.  I think this restaurant may become one of our favorites to watch sunsets - and they make good drinks!

Monday, Dec 20th

Today found us crossing the Sunshine Skyway Bridge from mainland Florida into St. Petersburg or St. Pete as it's called by the locals.  The bridge, an amazing feat in itself, is 5.5 miles long  spanning the emerald-green waters of the Gulf.  Construction began in 1981 and completed in 1987, at a cost of $244M dollars.  21 steel cables along the center line of the bridge support the structure.  It is truly a sight to behold.

Our destination today was Fort DeSoto Park.  I had read that it had one of the best dog beaches and thought it was time that Harley got to run free on the beach again.  He loves it so much - he runs and runs and runs, and waits for us to catch up to him.  It was a beautiful day for the drive and Fort DeSoto beach is as awesome as they say - voted America's Top Beach by TripAdvisor for the 2nd year in a row.  And just down the beach a bit you find St. Pete Beach white sand beach and park after park after park.  Unfortunately we did not get to tour Fort DeSoto itself as it is under repair at this time.

We ate lunch/dinner at a great restaurant called the Hurricane Seafood Restaurant.  The owner sat and talked with us for awhile, telling us about his time spent in Idaho with the National Guard.  Wonderful food and a walk to the rooftop of the restaurant to gaze at the view left us breathless - both from the view and the stairs LOL!  On the roof is a really cute little bar and several tables that just await the setting sun.  I wish we would have been there a little later and we would have stayed to watch the spectacular sunset.

The photos you see of The Pink Lady hotel are actually of the The Don CeSar Hotel which opened in 1928 and gained renown as the Gulf playground for America's pampered rich at the height of the Jazz Age and it still serves as a popular retreat for the rich and famous of today.  The cost to build 1.25 Million, 300% over it's projected budget and 110 more rooms.  The original owner died and left it to his wife.  When it fell into disrepair, The Pink Lady was sold for $450,000 to the U. S. Army and it was turned into an military hospital and reopened in 1942.  In 1944 the Don CeSar became a U. S. Air Force convalescent center. In June 1945 the Don CeSar was ordered closed and was vacant by September of that year. It was converted into a Veterans Administation Regional Office by the end of 1945.

DON CESAR HOTEL - REMINDS ME OF THE BROADMOOR HOTEL IN COLORADO SPRINGS
In November 1967 the Veterans Administration began moving out of the Don Ce-Sar. By spring 1969, the once grand hotel was vacant. The plan to raze the graffiti-covered hotel was met with fierce opposition from local residents. In March 1972 the Don CeSar was sold to C.L.Pyatt and William Bowman Jr., a Holiday Inn franchise owner. The Don CeSar  reopened on November 23, 1973.  The Don CeSar was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

The beaches on St. Pete were also our most lucrative for shell capturing .... check out the photos by clicking here (Simply Shells).

Whooooooo, I think I'm done!  I hope everyone set their alarms and got up to view the lunar eclipse of the Winter Solstice.  Dick got me up and I'm glad he did - it was simply spectacular and the stars were so bright!

BEFORE THE ECLIPSE

DURING THE ECLIPSE

As I was finishing up the blog, there was a knock at the door, followed by several park members singing Christmas carols.  I think maybe that was a first for me and very enjoyable.

One more thing to share before I go ...

Are you willing...
To stoop down and consider the needs
and desires of little children;
To remember the weakness and loneliness
of people who are growing old;
To stop asking how much your friends love you,
and ask yourself whether you love them enough;
To bear in mind the things that other people
have to bear in their hearts;
To trim your lamp so that it will give more light and less smoke,
and carry it in front so that your shadow will fall behind you;
To make a grave for your ugly thoughts
and a garden for your kindly feeling,
with the gate open?
Are you willing to do these things for a day?
Then you can keep Christmas...
After all, Christmas - living is the best kind of Christmas - giving.

A Victorian Christmas Experience

On Friday, December 3rd, we took a tour of the Henry B Plant Museum with my sister Patt.  I'm grateful that we have her as our tour guide because she is so familiar with the area and fascinates us with all of the stories that go with it.

The Henry B. Plant Museum is housed in the 1891 Tampa Bay Hotel, now a National Historic Landmark and home to The University of Tampa During the 1880's, Henry Bradley Plant was building an empire of railroads, steamships and hotels. The hotel was financed by Plant personally, not investors, at a cost of $2,500,000 and an additional $500,000 was spent for furnishings. It took two years to build, covered six acres and was one-quarter mile long. The 511 rooms were the first in Florida to be electrified. Advertised as completely fireproof, the structure is built of poured concrete reinforced with steel rails and cables in between floors. The building featured all of the latest luxuries including a billiard room, barbershop, shoeshine service, beauty shop, flower shop, telegraph office, formal dining room, Grand Salon, Music Room with orchestra and telephones in all guest rooms.

The grounds of the Hotel were as awe-inspiring as the building itself, spanning 150 acres. The amenities included an 9-hole golf course, flower conservatory, tennis courts, croquet courts, boathouse, hunting and fishing grounds, stables, racetrack, kennels, exposition hall with Florida products on view, casino with 2000 seat auditorium, heated indoor swimming pool, bowling alley, spa facilities and card rooms, totaling 21 buildings in all.

After the death of Henry Plant, the building was bought by the city of Tampa in 1904. It continued to operate as a hotel until 1932. In 1933, the Tampa Municipal Museum was established in order to preserve the legacy of the Tampa Bay Hotel, becoming the Henry B. Plant Museum in 1974.  Today its mission is to interpret the Tampa Bay Hotel at the turn of the century and the Victorian lifestyles of America's Gilded Age for people of all ages, backgrounds, and levels of interest.

We were so impressed with the architecture of this magnificent building; as you can see by the photos, no details were spared either inside or outside.

Beneath towering silver minarets, the extravagantly adorned former Tampa Bay Hotel captures the spirit of the season – Victorian style.  There were 14 exhibit rooms; each dazzling with trimmed trees uniquely designed in 19th century themes and antique holiday accessories.  While strolling down the Grand Hallway, you could just imagine the ladies in all their splendor, on the arms of well-dressed gentlemen, attending the wonderful Christmas parties, singing carols, and enjoying spiced wine.

Christmas traditions are created by families and passed along from generation to generation.  These time-honored rituals thrill us when we are children and later, as adults, they call forth memories that comfort us in an uncertain world.  We hope that you, too, are making Christmas memories that last forever in your family!

After a stroll through the beautiful Victorian Christmas, we headed for downtown Tampa.  Patt was hoping that she could show us the interior of the Old Tampa Theatre, which is listed as one of the top 10 iconic show places in the World.   They opened the doors on October 15, 1926, and was the first to offer indoor air conditioning in Tampa.  Showing as it's first picture, the silent Ace of Cads.

Back then, tickets cost 10 cents apiece, ushers worked the rows of the 1,446-seat auditorium, and an organist charmed audiences on a Mighty Wurlitzer during intermission.  The theater—saved from demolition by historic preservationists nearly four decades ago—draws crowds to downtown Tampa with classic movie series, independent features, live concerts, even a filmmaking camp for local students. Unfortunately we were not able to view the inside but Dick and I will make a trip back in the near future to see a movie!

Downtown Tampa is like any other urban city - several blocks of empty businesses, boarded up windows and graffiti, and then a couple of blocks away thriving restaurants, shops and other businesses.

From downtown Tampa we headed to to an area called Channelside, which sits directly on Tampa Bay.  Here we found the aquarium and a shopping district with restaurants.  We'll save the aquarium for another day but we did eat lunch at Bennigans (no Linda, I didn't take any pictures); food was okay, but the waiter, well he was another story.  Can any one say "penny tip."

It was a good day and one we will remember for a long time.

Due to the fact that uploading so many pictures was eating away at our month GB count, I have gone back to using Smilebox for our photos.  For more pictures please click here.

Happy Trails,

Jumping Into December

NO, THOSE ARE NOT PAJAMAS!

After recovering from our wonderful Thanksgiving dinner, we decided to get ambitious (well sort of).  Dick help me set up a couple of jewelry tables at the Christmas Craft Fair in our neighboring senior park.  I coaxed him with the promise of a $2.50 breakfast that he didn't have to cook.    Dick never did eat breakfast but I munched down on scrambled eggs, sausage, biscuits & gravy, and orange juice.  No wonder I'm not losing any weight!  Three hours of socializing and meeting new people, a few sales, and we packed up and returned home.

On one of our walks around the "hood," Harley and I found this little guy munching down the grass ....  He was about 8" long and didn't mind us a bit.

Sunday found us at my nephew Rick's house borrowing his truck and circular saw - let the deck building begin!  Dick and I decided that a new deck would be our Christmas present to each other this year, knowing that we'll have to leave it behind when we leave :(   Good thing we had the shade of the RV awning and our pop up canopy tent - cause without that I think we would have been building deck in the dark when it was cool.
HALF WAY DONE

OUR NEW DECK

Oh my gosh or OMG as the text generation says - I simply can't believe that tomorrow is December 1st!  Dick and I are both donning "summer" colds - damn!  If I'm going to feel bad, I may as well do it in Idaho, sitting by the fireplace and watching the snow fall, with a hot toddy in my hand!

It seems like we were just putting away our tree from last Christmas.  Oh wait, we were! cause the Coca Cola tree was still set up down in the basement and I finally put it to bed for good!  Ha, ha, ha ..... or is that Ho, ho, ho?

I finally met our next door neighbor; her name is Marie and she runs fair concessions, elephant ears in particular, and has just come up with a new tasty fair item - deep fried strawberries sprinkled with chocolate and powdered sugar.  She says they're to die for and I can hardly wait to try one!

We've been trying to get connected to her internet (with her knowledge of course) because as we found out - Verizon mobile hot spot is very expensive for us.  I got the bill for last month and it was almost $200.  Going to Verizon tomorrow to see why on earth it was so high!  We also found out that Marie is a good cook; she supplied us with dinner tonight - cabbage rolls, and were they ever good!  I think she's going to be a great neighbor to have!

Harley and I took a walk around the neighborhood tonight and snapped a couple of Christmas photos for your enjoyment.

YEP, THAT'S  PALM TREE

I don't think we'll get into Christmas quite that much this year!  With our Happy Holidays flamingo welcome mat and the lights around our deck, maybe we'll add a wreath to the front of the RV and a lit up pink flamingo!

Happy Thanksgiving from Sunny Florida

OLIVIA & NAN
Happy Thanksgiving from all the Turkeys in Florida!

Can you think of something better to do on Thanksgiving than eat, watch football, eat some more, take a nap,  eat dessert, swim!

MEN IN THE KITCHEN??  COOKING??
TOO MANY COOKS??
WARNING - DO NOT TOUCH THE TURKEY!
OLIVIA & GRANDMA PATT

OOPS I THINK YOU MISSED ONE
OLIVIA & MOM JENEY
We had discussed on Saturday gathering and going to a Thanksgiving Day buffet; on Sunday I mentioned to Ricky that I would cook if I had a kitchen; on Wednesday I was at the grocery store buying ingredients to make my great stuffing; and, on Thursday we were all sitting down for a wonderful home cooked meal.  (Nope, no gator!)

Ricky and I put the turkey in the oven after I showed him how to stuff it LOL and then the men took over cooking - literally!  If that isn't a first, then I don't know what is.
MELVIN
HAPPY, HAPPY BABY ALISHA

Rob's wife Sandy is a home care nurse and she brought her current charge Melvin with her.  He is a sweet man and thoroughly enjoyed his dinner and, I believe, the company.  Although I think that Nan's screams from the cold water in the pool woke him from his nap - I know it did me!
TIME TO CHOW DOWN

Gma Patt and Olivia spent some quality time doing "crafts."

4-month old Alisha is the sweetest and most adorable great-niece ever.  A very calm, not fussy baby, and you can tell she loves her big sisters very much by the big smile that spreads across her face when she hears their voices.

Things I am thankful for ....

My sweet, tolerant husband ...
a truly wonderful and one of a kind son ... a beautiful and caring daughter-in-law ... two wonderful grandkids ...

The love of family and friends ... my soft bed ... my decent health ... my loyal companion Harley ... living in the great United States of America and being able to travel and enjoy it ...

The love of God in my head and in my heart ....

Gma Jo put olives on Olivia's fingers and that little one did not know what to think.  First she decided they were to play with and then she saw me eat one, so she tried it.  Must not have been to her taste though as she quickly spit it out.

DON'T PUSH ME IN !!

SASSY THAT IS NOT A GOOD IDEA

May you enjoy all of the blessings in your life.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING !!

Out and About

Tuesday, November 21, Sunny and 84

After dropping off my bike at the repair shop, we took our first "check this out it's amazing" trip and headed to the Manatee Viewing Center at Tampa Electric's Big Bend Power Station.

Every year between November and April, when Tampa Bay's water temperature reaches 68 or colder, the warm-blooded manatees migrate to the water discharge canal of the Big Bend Power Station.  Manatees are an endangered species and they were fun to watch, swimming lazily about, coming up for air every few minutes..
But there were more amazing creatures to watch and I was totally fascinated by the little red crabs as they skittered on the shore.  There was a shore bird of some type wading close by and the smorgasbord feast of crab was too much for him.  He would dart in, they would scatter en-mass, he would grab a tasty morsel and carry it back to the water.

We watched the huge tarpon fish flashing in the sunlight and walked the tidal walkway through the mangrove, enjoying the flowers, crabs, and the ocean.

The average adult manatee or "sea cow" is about 10 feet long and weighs approximately 1,000 pounds. It has a large, seal-like body that tapers to a large, spatula-shaped flat tail. The two forelimbs or flippers of the manatee are paddle-shaped with up to four nails at the tip of each flipper. The finely wrinkled skin of the adult manatee is gray or gray-brown. The hair is thin and far apart, except for the stiff, brush-like facial whiskers, which help the manatee forage for food.

If you would like to learn more about the manatee, click on the link below.  They also have a webcam where you, too, can watch the manatees with us.  http://www.tampaelectric.com/manatee/funstuff/webcam2/

From the Manatee Viewing Center we headed south on 301 toward Ruskin and Bahia Beach. About 52 years ago I played on this beach while my dad either managed the restaurant here or worked on it while it was being built.  I remember it was brand new at the time and I don't know why we left and went back to Colorado - not questions that an 8 year old would ask and by the time I got around to thinking about it, my dad was no longer around to answer my questions.  Gosh how I miss him!

We ate lunch at the Sunset Grill and plan on coming back one of these evenings to sit on the deck with our Mai Tais and watch the sun go down over the ocean.
